Possibly the best all-around value of the six multifunction units we compare here, the Canon MultiPass C5000 stands out in this group. The unit outdoes its less expensive twin by supplying a color scanner, and topped our charts in some key speed measurements while producing high-quality output.

The MultiPass C5000 essentially tied the C3000 model for the best quality output: Our jury consistently placed the Canon models ahead of the competition. Like the C3000, the C5000 prints at up to 720x360 dpi; in fact, it uses the identical cartridges and printheads. As a result, the C5000 ran neck and neck with the C3000, with times faster than the rest of the pack on our Word document, PageMaker publication, and Photoshop image; its printing time was slower on the PowerPoint presentation, however.

The MultiPass C5000's scanning throughput (at its optical resolution of 300x300 dpi) came in dead last, but the unit remained commendably fast at 360x360-dpi copying, pointing to a possible communications bottleneck at the PC. We found the print quality worth the wait, however; not stellar, but the best of this lot. Like the C3000, it produces readable text and satisfactory skin tones and colors, and also will run you 12 cents per page color and 3 cents per page monochrome. And though it scans slowly, it produced generally good results. Monochrome was visually better than on the C3000, and its gray scale exhibited less banding, although it was a bit heavy on the shadows. On the other hand, it managed to hold color balance relatively well, with good skin tones and surprisingly little clipping. In fact, the color scanning was probably the best of this group.

The MultiPass C5000 looks like the MultiPass C3000 model reviewed above, but adds separate Color Copy and B&W Fax/Copy buttons. Like the C3000, this model scans and prints copies simultaneously.

The Canon's ink cartridges are easy to change. You simply press the cartridge button, and the cartridge holder moves to the center; then you lift a lever and lift out the cartridge. Another lever lets you adjust the printhead gap for envelopes and other thick stock. In addition to the same driver software as the C3000, the factory renewed, factory sealed, and factory guaranteed MultiPass C5000 comes with Xerox's Pagis for MultiPass. This program gives you an alternate interface for scanning, faxing, and copying, and includes Xerox's TextBridge Classic OCR software. It also automatically installs a SendTo Bar, which is a vertical toolbar that hosts icons for output devices, drives, and applications. This feature enables you to drag documents to the icons to launch them. Both of the Canons reviewed here come with Canon Creative 3, a two-CD set of home-oriented applications. It also includes Canon's WebRecord for printing Web pages and Starfish Software's Internet Utilities 97 for managing bookmarks, monitoring connection quality, and performing FTP transfers. The Canon MultiPass C5000 leverages the company's older inkjet printing and software technology with a well-engineered control panel and built-in fax. The addition of high-quality output and faster performance make this unit a value leader.
